How It Works

Shareholder Democracy is a movement to create a market signal for love and care by empowering not-for-profit civil society organizations to represent shareholders of publicly traded companies, thus giving voice to owners' values.

The world we have is the one we're voting for

Unfortunately, today, most people either don't vote their shares, can't vote their shares, or their shares are auto-voted by someone who doesn't have any idea what matters to them. This creates a misalignment between what matters to each shareholder and the market signal they are sending to corporate managers.

Two people talking. What do you call cancer doctors and foundations whose financial portfolios are voted to cause cancer? Oncologists.
Two people talking. What do you call tree huggers and foundations who vote their portfolios to maximize short term profit at the expense of the planet? Environmentalists.
Two people talking. What do you call parents who work to stop child trafficking but vote for corporate directors who enable child predators on tech platforms? Human rights defenders.

Tomorrow's Representative Shareholder Democracy

You can vote alongside trusted organizations to express what matters to you. Organizations can represent your values, engaging with management, crafting shareholder proposals, and selecting corporate directors.

Together, you have a voice at the table that you can't have alone.

The Infrastructure We're Building

  1. A voting policy

1Civil society organizations create shareholder voting policies.

  2. A voting recommendation

2Voting policies guide the creation of shareholder voting recommendations.

  3. A network of platforms

3Voting recommendations are distributed to platforms where people hold investments, including retail brokerages and institutional managers adopting passthrough voting.

  4. A person casting their vote

4People choose which voting recommendations to use based on who they trust to express their values.

  5. A market signal

5Shareholder voting creates a new market signal expressing people's values, and empowers civil society organizations to engage management on the issues they care about.

  6. A corporation and its owners

6Corporate purpose aligns with societal values, and businesses are unleashed to solve our greatest challenges.
