Why shareholder democracy is helpful
Integrated water resources management is a governmental and transboundary process of law, institutions, planning and finance. The global implementation degree stood at 57 percent in 2023, with financing the weakest dimension at 49 out of 100. Corporations enter as major water users whose participation in basin planning and whose lobbying on water law can help or hinder. If all listed companies backed basin authorities, disclosed withdrawals and lobbied for IWRM funding, plans would be easier to adopt and finance. Ceres' Connect the Drops network showed the lever by contributing to California's water-efficiency laws AB 1668 and SB 606. Most of the outcome nonetheless sits with ministries, river basin organizations and treaty negotiations between states that corporate conduct cannot substitute for. Owners help at the margin by aligning corporate policy engagement with sustainable water management.
