Target 8.9: Sustainable tourism that creates jobs
By 2030, devise and implement policies to promote sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products
Owners remove an obstacle nothing else removes. Others must also act.
Why shareholder democracy is necessary
Tourism contributes about 10 percent of global GDP and one in ten jobs. UNEP projects business-as-usual growth of 131 percent in emissions and 251 percent in solid waste by 2050. The conduct of listed hotel groups, cruise lines, airlines and online travel platforms on emissions, local sourcing and labor is therefore a necessary input. Corporate action at scale is visible. Marriott reports over one million associates trained on human trafficking prevention, and over 800,000 workers at Hilton and Hyatt have taken the same program. Shareholder voting has already reached the sector. A Say on Climate proposal filed by As You Sow at Booking Holdings, seeking a Paris-compliant net zero transition plan with annual reporting, won 56.4 percent support in 2021. Governments write the tourism policies the target names, so owners supply a necessary input and governments must also act.

We have not yet written down the two answers behind this rating. Recording them on every item, so a reader can check the reasoning and not only the conclusion, is work in progress.
Every rating is the higher of two answers, one for what companies do and one for what they spend to stop the outcome, because the same vote reaches both. See the full method.

Publish a plan showing how the company will bring its emissions to net zero in line with the Paris climate agreement, and report on it to shareholders each year.
Result: 56.4 percent in favor at the June 2021 annual meeting, a majority, with more than 44 billion dollars of assets voted in support
Booking Holdings released its first Climate Action Plan on March 22, 2022, setting near-zero emissions for its own operations by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2040 using Science Based Targets initiative criteria. The company's announcement does not refer to the shareholder vote

How this rating was made
Every item on every one of our maps is read against one question: how far does this depend on the people who own companies voting their values? We answer it twice, once for what companies do and once for what they spend to stop the outcome, and take whichever answer is higher, since the same vote reaches both. The score carries its reasoning and its sources so that a reader can check it rather than take it.
- Pivotal. Owners voting their values can deliver most of the outcome.
- Necessary. Owners remove an obstacle nothing else removes, and others must also act.
- Helpful. Owners voting their values help, and others carry most of it.
- Independent. This moves without owners. Other levers carry it.
The advocacy record on this page holds only what a source we opened says happened. Where we searched and found nothing, the page says so rather than leaving a silence. Where a campaign names a filer the source does not name, it says that too. Ratings are ours; the list of subjects is UN Sustainable Development Goals's, and we link to their original.
