The Human Rights Defense Center (HRDC) was founded in 1990 in Washington state as Prisoners' Legal News (later Prison Legal News), and is now a national 501(c)(3) organization with 18 employees, including four staff attorneys, headquartered in Lake Worth, Florida with offices in Seattle, Nashville and Washington, D.C. Alongside publishing (Prison Legal News, a 72-page monthly with subscribers in all 50 states and abroad) and a nationwide prisoner-rights litigation project, HRDC's shareholder advocacy at CoreCivic and The GEO Group is carried out by its associate director Alex Friedmann, who holds a small amount of stock personally and has filed resolutions on sexual abuse reporting, prisoner phone rates, reentry spending and independent facility audits; his 2012 EDGAR PX14A6G filing on the CCA sexual-abuse-reporting resolution identifies him as employed with HRDC.
