Why shareholder democracy is necessary
Road deaths are 1.19 million a year, nine in ten of them in low- and middle-income countries. Only 35 countries require all key vehicle safety features such as advanced braking and impact protection. Automakers decide which safety equipment goes into the cars sold in the other 150-plus countries, and their trade associations shape the rules. InfluenceMap found 14 of 15 major automakers opposed at least one policy promoting electric vehicles and that Australia's 2024 efficiency standard was weakened after industry lobbying. Suppose every listed automaker, bus and rail-car maker, ride-hail platform and transit contractor built to the highest safety and emissions standard everywhere. Suppose they lobbied for UN vehicle regulations, fuel-economy rules and transit funding rather than against them. A large share of the safety and sustainability halves of this target would follow, and organized opposition to transit investment would fall away. Public transport expansion itself, road design, enforcement and fares for vulnerable users remain government functions that owners cannot supply. Corporate change is therefore a necessary input but not sufficient.
